METRO Art Studios is located in the historic Crown Corset factory building on Railroad Avenue in the South End of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The three-story building is being meticulously renovated to accommodate fine artists in 38 studios. The grounds will include space for outdoor performances and a public art garden featuring murals and sculptures by local artists. The Crown Corset factory, built in 1907, manufactured corsets, hoop skirts, and other foundation garments. The 500 mostly female workers of the factory walked out in August 1915, joining a strike of garment workers in Bridgeport that led to all American workers having an 8-hour work day. The creativity and productivity of the building lives on with the vibrant and thriving arts community that now resides within its walls.

New Work: Dance With Me

“My dad’s birthday is coming up. One of my earliest and favorite memories with him is dancing. He called traditional English country (contra) dances and the few times he would let someone else call he would dance with me. When waltzing he would twirl me around and I would stand on his feet to learn the steps. This piece reminds me of dancing in a sea of family and friends with my dad.”

For Dance With Me, Biwa freshwater pearls are snuggled up with 7-inch-long pieces of Connecticut and Nova Scotia driftwood. The bracelet has a sterling silver lobster clasp and is 9 inches long, although the width makes it fit nicely on an 8 inch wrist.

New Work: Time Piece

“I have been thinking about the speed of time A LOT lately. It changes so much, so frequently. Some days time flies, and when I look at my daughters I can’t believe how much time has passed in a blink. Other days it seems like the day could be a whole week’s worth of time. The pandemic has totally influenced our perspective on time, hasn’t it? I almost feel like we’ve been time traveling or that there is a whole other dimension of time that we don’t understand.”

Make a statement about these passing days — how quickly time flies, how slowly time unfolds — with this stunning found-object necklace by Connecticut jeweler and sculptor Kristin Merrill. Sure to be a conversation starter, the 16” necklace is made of agate, found rubber, watch parts and a gold plate clasp.
